Profile info for Rivelata
Mar. 25th, 2008 11:18 pmNAME: Shinomori Aoshi
FANDOM: Rurouni Kenshin
TIMELINE PERIOD: After the battle in Kanryuu’s mansion, as Aoshi heads into the mountains to train.
BACKGROUND: Tall, powerful, with a piercing blue gaze, Shinomori Aoshi cuts quite the striking figure. And well he should – he’s the youngest leader in the history of one of the most powerful groups of ninja in Japan.
The Edo period, Japan – an elite group of ninja, the Oniwabanshuu, are selected to serve the dying Shogunate. And they are led by 15 year-old Shinomori Aoshi, a young ninja who exhibits calm, cunning, and a cool intelligence, as well as a fierce loyalty to his companions. He takes control just in time for the Oniwabanshuu to defend Edo Castle against the Imperialists – but they see very little battle. The Shogunate falls, and the ninja are left to find positions in the new government. Aoshi stands by them all.
Refusing to himself take a government position, Aoshi works to ensure that each and every one of his ninja finds a place – a steady job, a means of living. And when four cannot – their abilities are based on their bodies, meaning that they are scorned as “freaks” – he cares for them, setting them up as a band of elite guards and taking the leadership position upon himself.
Eleven years later, they find themselves under the employ of one Takeda Kanryuu, opium dealer and weapons merchant. And through him, Aoshi runs across the man who was once labeled the strongest of the Imperialists – Himura Kenshin, the Hitokiri Battousai. With his battle-spirit awakened once again, Aoshi can see nothing but the chance to redeem himself, to reclaim the title of “strongest” for his Oniwabanshuu – the title they lost in the war. He cares nothing for the life of one so pathetic as Takeda Kanryuu, and goes so far as to speak that opinion aloud. Bad idea.
Aoshi gets his fight with Kenshin, but the battle is interrupted by the insulted Kanryuu – who unleashes the power of a gatling gun. Aoshi takes bullets to both legs, rendering him incapable of the speed he requires to dodge – and that’s when the last four Oniwabanshuu appear to protect him. Because for all his appearances of being cold and cruel, Aoshi is revered and admired by his subordinates – and he has always cared for them, protected them. They repay the favor with their lives, drawing Kanryuu’s attention long enough for Kenshin to disable the weapon. But it’s too late for Aoshi – he’s lost everything he cares about.
He disappears, taking the heads of his fallen comrades and burying them as best he can, swearing the bring them the title of “strongest” as flowers to lay on their graves. And then he takes off into the mountains, seeking the strength he lacks. He ends up in Rivelata.
